WARSAW
OPERA
HOLIDAYS IN WARSAW - 2010
The operatic life of Warsaw is centred on two
very different theatres, The National Opera at the Teatr
Wielki and the Warsaw Chamber Opera. The National Opera
and Ballet occupies one of Europe’s largest theatres
and the Warsaw Chamber Opera gives its performances in a
small converted church with seating for just 159 people. The
Opera Narodowa (National Opera) presents performances of
ballet and opera from September through to June. Its huge
theatre is divided into two theatres the huge Moniuszko
Auditorium and the far from tiny Mylarnsky Auditorium. The
programmes include the standard works of opera and ballet
and also Polish operas such as Strazny Dwor and Halka by
Stanslav Moniusko. Russian ballet and opera are also well
represented in the company’s repertoire.
The
Warsaw Chamber Opera (Founded in 1965). This company is
perhaps best known for its Mozart Festival, which takes
place each summer during June and July. This festival
is always appreciated by our clients. The repertoire of
the company encompasses a wide variety of styles but it
is the only company in the world to have Mozart's entire
operatic output in its repertoire. The company performs
in its own charming, tiny theatre. Having only 159 seats
ensures that good viewing and hearing can expected from
all parts of the auditorium and its smallness creates
a real court theatre atmosphere. Although it has a small
opera house, it is in fact a large company. They can easily
find the personnel to put on a major opera, an oratorio
concert and a chamber concert, all on the same night in
different venues. The Mozart Festival features less well-known
Mozart operas as well as works such as Cosi Fan Tutte,
The Magic Flute and Don Giovanni.

The
Warsaw Chamber Opera House, the Palace on the Water, the
Former Carmelite Church, the Royal Castle and the Old Orangery.
By day, these are major tourist attractions, by night they
become concert venues during the Mozart Festival. Warsaw
has many other places of interest, for those interested
in the music of Frederic Chopin there are regular and free
outdoor performances of his piano works on Sunday afternoons
near to his monument in the Lazienki Park. The city also
has a museum dedicated to Chopin and about an hour’s
drive outside the city is his birthplace and childhood home
which contains interesting memorabilia including beautifully
executed drawings and musical manuscripts by the composer
at seven years of age. During the summer regular recitals
are given here, space is limited but the music is broadcast
on speakers so that the music can be enjoyed outside in
the extensive gardens of this former manor house.
