TALLINN

ESTONIAN NATIONAL OPERA AND BALLET

Tallinn is probably the most modern of the three Baltic capitals but at its centre is the medieval city with a maze of cobbled streets, its city walls, merchant’s houses, guild halls, fine restaurants and soaring church spires. There is much to see in Tallinn but while in Tallinn, there is the possibility of visiting Helsinki by ferry. Both cities are ports and there are several crossings daily; both ferry terminals are close to the city centres, the fares are inexpensive and the crossing time is only an hour and a half. We can also arrange onward travel to other parts of Estonia such as the peaceful island of Saaremaa or to Estonian’s other cities like Tartu or Parnu.
Estonia’s operatic traditions are 250 years old and the Estonian National Opera was founded in 1906. The core of its present repertoire consists of classical and contemporary operas, ballets, operettas and musicals. While the opera houses of many formerly communist cities have increased their ticket prices very substantially the Estonian National Opera & Ballet still offers great bargains; apart from special gala performances, performances by visiting companies and other special events it is difficult to pay more than £30 for a ticket in the very best category!
Opera performances this year include Die Fledermaus, Cosi fan tutte, La Bohème, the Queen of Spades, Eugene Onegin, La Traviata which has been much enjoyed by many Operas Abroad clients in Tallinn and The Love of Three Oranges which was chosen recently to be the first opera ever broadcast in full on Estonian national television. An Operas Abroad group greatly enjoyed the ballet The Three Musketeers last April and the work now seems to be firmly embedded it the company’s repertoire. The score for the ballet is by Sir Malcolm Arnold, a composer well-know to British audiences for his film scores to The Bridge on the River Kwai and the Inn of the Sixth Happiness as well as his chamber and orchestral works including the ever popular overture Tam O’Shanter.
We offer packages, which include return flights, airport transfers, three hotel nights with breakfast and opera synopses. The ticket prices for opera, ballets and concerts are shown on the schedule at the end of the brochure are all best category ones.

Hotel Detail

The Three Sisters Hotel *****
combines beautifully the medieval old charm of Tallinn with the comforts of modern technology. The three attached houses date back to 1362. The twenty-three suites and rooms are all different in shape and size due to the unique construction of these three historical buildings. Each room contains luxury furnishings, complimentary toiletries, in-room safe, satellite TV, CD/DVD player, hair dryer, blackout blinds and dimmer lights, umbrellas, bathrobes & slippers and wheelchair-accessibility. They also offer the largest showerheads in Eastern Europe that have been described by clients as being in a tropical storm. The walking distance to the Opera House is about 15 minutes.
Hotel Barons ****
This small and atmospheric hotel is located a couple of steps from the Town Hall Square. Carefully restored in the early 20th century style, the hotel has retained the contemporary interior and atmosphere. Previously, the building served as a bank - it still has the vaults that are today used for keeping the guests' valuables. The hotel features an á la carte restaurant, a lobby bar and a sauna. There are 32 rooms, all nicely appointed and fully equipped with modern amenities, including minibar, air conditioning and floor heating in the bathrooms. Rooms for non-smokers and sufferers from allergies are provided. The hotel is about 300 metres from the Opera House.

Hotel Old Town Maestro’s ***
This comfortable hotel occupies an historic building which was built in the 15th century and adapted for its use as a hotel in 2002. The rooms are large, it has a lobby bar and the staff is friendly. There is a breakfast room but they do not serve meals at other times of day, this should not be a problem as there are many restaurants all around it.
The hotel has an excellent location in the old city, very close to the medieval Town Hall Square and it is about 300 metres from the Opera House.

The performances will be evening ones unless shown otherwise.
