ST PETERSBURG - 2010
The Mariinsky Theatre (formerly known as the
Kirov) has been the home of Russian ballet and opera since
the 1860s and it was the venue for the first performances
of many great classics of Russian opera such as A Life
For The Tsar, Ruslan And Lyudmila, Boris Godunov, Khovanschina,
The Invisible City Of Kitezh and The Queen Of Spades.
Its Artistic Director, Valery Gergiev enjoys the status
of a national hero in Russia for his efforts in maintaining
the highest artistic standards throughout Russia’s
political changes. The Mariinsky Theatre is not the only
venue for opera and ballet, there is also the Hermitage
Theatre, the Alexandrinsky Ballet Theatre and for those
who enjoy very traditional productions of opera the Mussorgsky
Theatre. During May, June and July the city will host
the ‘Festival of Stars of the White Nights’.
This annual celebration of Russian culture takes place
against the backdrop of the magical midsummer skylines
of St Petersburg. At this time of year, the skies are
truly white, not because of snow but due to the city’s
northern location where the sun barely sets on the horizon.
Early booking is recommended for the Festival.
The
prices shown below include return flights, airport transfers
and three hotel nights with breakfast and opera synopses.
These do not include the costs of travel, visas or theatre

refer to the Opera and Ballet Schedule download.
Visas cost £45. Higher rates apply during the
‘Festival of Stars of the White Nights’
We
are always pleased to arrange holidays to meet individual
requirements,
extra nights, concerts and guided sight-seeing.
