Four venues accommodate Rome’s busy operatic life. The State Opera uses the Teatro Costanzi and the nearby Teatro Nazionale for most of its performances but in July and August they move outdoors to the ancient Roman baths, the Terme di Caracalla and give performances starting at 9pm when it is cooler. Another venue is the tiny Teatro Flaiano near to the Pantheon, the theatre specializes in pocket-sized opera. Their performances are reduced in length to about ninety minutes with four electronic keyboards in place of an orchestra and they do not have a chorus. On a recent escorted group tour clients of Operas Abroad did enjoy a performance of Tosca at this theatre but it must be said that the sumptuous production of Rossini’s Moses in Egypt at the Teatro Costanzi was the favourite. The venues are pictured above L-R the Teatro Costanzi (also known as the Teatro dell’ opera), the Teatro Nazionale, the Terme di Caracalla, the Teatro Flaiano and below them the interior of the Teatro Costanzi.
Puccini’s Tosca will be performed at the Teatro Flaiano on October 23, 28 & 30 and December 2, 4, 9, 11, 16, 18 & 30.
