PRAGUE

Prague State Opera - The Estates Theatre - Czech National
Theatre
Prague has three opera houses. They all present
performances throughout the season so visitors have a
wide choice and much can be seen during a short holiday.
Understandably, opera is a popular art in the country,
which produced such composers as Dvorak, Smetana and Janacek
and also hosted the premiere of Don Giovanni. Fine performances
can be heard at Prague's three opera houses; the State
Opera House, The Estates Theatre (which saw the first
performance of Don Giovanni and the Czech national anthem)
and the National Theatre. We will be pleased to obtain
tickets for concerts in Prague. There are regular concerts
by the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, the Prague Symphony
Orchestra and many other orchestras, chamber groups and
choirs. Many of the concerts take place in interesting
and historic venues such as the Lichtenstein Palace, the
Mozart Museum in Bertramka, Prague Castle, the Dvorak
Hall, the Spanish Synagogue and the Klementinum Mirror
Hall

Litomyšl
Festival June-July
After
the bustle of Prague, you could move on to a more rural
and sleepy setting. The baroque town of Litomysl hosts
an annual festival of opera, concerts and ballet. Most
of the performances are in the open-air courtyard of
the town’s exquisite castle. Next to the castle
is the birthplace of Bedrich Smetana, which is open
to the public.
Since
1949, a music festival has been organized almost each
year between the end of June and the beginning of July
in Litomyšl, an old East-Bohemian town where Bedrich
Smetana – the founder of Czech national music
– was born. It mainly presents opera performances
but concerts and ballet also feature in the programme.
Performers include important international soloists
such as Katia Ricciarelli, Sherill Milnes, Sergei Larin
, Eva Urbanová, Dagmar Pecková and Magdalena
Kozena. Visiting companies have included The National
Theatre Prague, The Czech Philharmonic, The Prague Symphony
Orchestra, The Prague Philharmonia, The National Theatre
Brno, The State Philharmonic orchestra of Brno, The
Slovak National Theatre, Bratislava and Slovak Philharmonic
Orchestra.
The
festival's main centre is right on the premises of the
magnificent Litomyšl State Castle, a UNESCO World
Heritage site. Main events normally take place in the
Second Courtyard, with excellent acoustics and unique
retractable roofing. Other venues include different
Castle halls, Litomysl churches and cathedrals, the
Smetana's House, the city of Pardubice – capital
of the region – and one other selected city of
the region. Litomysl is 94 miles from Prague. The programme
of performances will be known by the end of February
2010.
