THE BOLSHOI THEATRE
The Bolshoi Theatre (literally ‘Big Theatre’)
is the ideal venue to see the greatest Russian masterpieces
of opera and ballet performed by these famous companies,
which have existed since 1776. Its present day members include
some 90 singers, 200 chorus members, and 230 musicians in
two orchestras who perform in their grand neo-classical
theatre. Great Russian operas by Mussorgsky, Borodin, Tchaikovsky,
Glinka, Profiev and Rimsky-Korsakov feature prominently
in its schedules alongside the standard operatic repertoire.
The theatre is undergoing renovations. While these take
place most of the performances will be transferred from
the Main Hall to the theatre’s Small Hall (a smaller
version of the Main Hall) and others will be staged at the
Kremlin State Palace.
The Bolshoi Ballet’s present high reputation in the
world of dance follows its long history of association with
many great dancers, choreographers and composer and the
landmark events in ballet history which have taken place
there such as the first performance of Swan Lake in 1877.
Moscow is certainly worth visiting even without the inducement
of a performance and the city’s beautifully decorated
and efficient metro which is ready to take its visitors
to a host of other interesting attractions such as Red Square,
St Basil’s Cathedral, the Kremlin, the Novedevichy
Convent and the Tretjakov Gallery. As well as the Bolshoi
Theatre there is also the Helikon Opera Theatre, the Novaya
Opera House and the Moscow Operetta Theatre. Concerts can
be heard at the Moscow State Conservatoire, The Tchaikovsky
Concert Hall and the Moscow International Arts Centre.
We will be pleased to provide tickets for performances at
any of Moscow’s theatres or concert venues and to
arrange for guided sight-seeing
