OPERA
HOLIDAYS IN BERLIN - 2010
Having three opera houses performing throughout
the season means that you are likely to be spoilt
for choice in this city. Some years ago all three
opera houses all performed The Marriage of Figaro
on the same night. There is now better co-operation
and this duplication is unlikely to happen again.
Baroque opera, contemporary works, rarities as well
as the standard repertoire can all be heard. Wagnerites
will be spoilt for choice with this season’s
schedule at the Deutsche Opera; two whole Ring Cycles
plus performances of the rarely heard Rienzi, Die
Meistersinger von Nürnburg, Tristan und Isolde
and Lohengrin sung by a great cast including Kristinn
Sigmundsonn, Ben Hepper, Ricarda Merbeth and Waltraud
Meier.The
Komische Oper does not entirely live up to the ‘comic’
part of its name this season. There are performances
of many tragedies such as La Bohème, Hamlet,
King Lear, La Traviata and even Mozart’s Requiem!
Lighter works are also scheduled such as Kiss Me
Kate, operettas by Johann Strauss and Donizetti’s
Don Pasquale with Jens Larsen in the title role.
A highlight at the Staats Oper is Verdi’s
Simon Boccanegra with Placido Domingo, Anjan Harteros,
Adriana Damato, Kwangchul Young and Ferruccio Furlanetto.
As well as staged performances there are also many
concerts with top singers. At the Staats Oper there
is Anna Netrebko (March 29th) and Thomas Hampson
(June 1st). The Deutsche Oper will be the venue
for concerts by Juan Diego Florez on April 4th &
7th (works by Rossini and Donizetti) and Dame Felicity
Lott on June 25th singing works by Resphigi, Britten,
Ravel and Richard Strauss. When not at one of the
opera houses, there is the Brandenburg Gate, the
Reichstag, the Potsdamer Platz and what remains
of the Wall to be explored.
The
prices shown below are for a four-day package
including return flights, airport transfers, and
three hotel nights with breakfast and opera synopses.
